Case Study: Dinero achieves instant 400% scalability and reliable geo-replication with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Dinero Case Study

SaaS accounting system instantly scales 400 percent on Microsoft Azure

Dinero is a Denmark-based SaaS accounting provider that lets small businesses create invoices, manage VAT, and access premium services on a freemium model. Rapid user growth—reaching about 100,000 registered users and adding ~1,500 new users monthly—created extreme usage spikes (up to 400% at quarter-end) that overloaded the company’s on-premises infrastructure and forced frequent, costly hardware upgrades.

Dinero migrated to Microsoft Azure PaaS in November 2015, using Azure SQL Database, Blob Storage, Redis Cache, Web Apps and WebJobs, plus Elastic Pools and geo-replication for resilience, and launched a Xamarin-built mobile app via partner Springfeed. The move (an ~8-hour switchover) delivered instant autoscaling to handle peak loads, reduced operations to a single DevOps engineer, lowered costs through elastic resource pooling, and enabled new features like machine-learning invoice categorization.
