Case Study: Rolls‑Royce achieves scalable data analytics and predictive maintenance with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Rolls Royce Case Study

Rolls-Royce and Microsoft collaborate to create new digital capabilities

Rolls‑Royce, a leading aircraft engine manufacturer and provider of TotalCare maintenance services for thousands of engines worldwide, faced a rapid surge in sensor-generated data that outpaced traditional analytics. The company needed to filter the signal from the noise to reduce costly aircraft-on-ground events, optimize fuel consumption and maintenance schedules, and expand its service offerings as fleets generate terabytes of telemetry, logs and weather and flight-plan data.

Rolls‑Royce built a scalable analytics platform on Microsoft Azure—using IoT solution accelerators to aggregate fleet data, Cortana Intelligence Suite for machine learning and anomaly detection, and Azure services (Data Factory, HDInsight, SQL, Blob Storage) plus Power BI for reporting. The solution enables predictive, component-level maintenance decisions, more targeted fuel- and schedule-optimization insights, faster customer dashboards, and a foundation for new data-driven services that improve availability and reduce operating costs.
