Rental Company Uses Virtualization to Establish Flexible Disaster Recovery Solution

Sunbelt Rentals, a U.S. equipment rental company with more than 400 locations and a multi‑billion‑dollar inventory, needed a reliable, cost‑effective disaster recovery solution to keep its 24/7 operations running and protect against technical failures or natural disasters. The company sought a colocation strategy that would support site replication and ensure business continuity without adding significant IT headcount or expense.

Sunbelt adopted Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper‑V, Hyper‑V Replica, System Center Virtual Machine Manager and Azure Site Recovery, with guidance from Microsoft Services, to replicate virtual machines between its Fort Mill data center and a new Little Rock colocation (with an interim Charlotte site). The implementation delivered flexible, affordable disaster recovery, reduced management overhead through centralized tools and private cloud testing, enabled future third‑site replication, and improved IT responsiveness to employees and customers.
