Quorum doubles key database’s workload while lowering DTU by 70% with SQL Database

Quorum, a U.S.-based oil and gas software company, delivers cloud-native monitoring and alerting for more than 25,000 wells using a multi-tenant Azure platform. Rapid IoT-driven growth pushed its central SQL Database to handle up to 5,000 transactions per second and caused DTU spikes that threatened real-time alerting and scalability — but Quorum needed a solution that avoided costly rearchitecting or platform changes.

Quorum adopted Azure SQL Database’s In‑Memory OLTP, converting the two highest‑load tables to memory‑optimized temporal tables and adding native‑compiled stored procedures in about three days. That change cut DTU consumption from 70% to 20% (roughly a 70% reduction), enabled onboarding of two large customers that doubled transaction workloads without extra DTU cost, and provided the headroom to scale further without major engineering effort.
