A Microsoft Azure Case Study
Merrill Corporation, a nearly 50‑year provider of secure document sharing for mergers and acquisitions and financial filings, faced rising customer expectations and cloud‑native competitors. Its legacy monolithic, three‑tier applications and waterfall development process made releases slow, risky, and ill-suited to quickly building new products or expanding into new markets.
Working with Pivotal and Microsoft, Merrill adopted Agile, re‑architected applications as microservices using Pivotal Cloud Foundry on Microsoft Azure (leveraging Azure IaaS, Blob Storage, Key Vault, and Active Directory) and trained teams on Spring Boot/Spring Cloud. The changes enabled daily code releases (versus five‑week cycles), accelerated product delivery (DatasiteOne’s first version in under a year), an internal 20× speed improvement, easier global expansion via Azure datacenters, stronger security, and expected multi‑million‑dollar datacenter cost savings.
