Portuguese retail analytics pioneer uses open source on Azure to go global

Movvo is a London‑headquartered location‑analytics firm with R&D in Porto that provides real‑time shopper insights to retailers and mall owners. When an opportunity arose to acquire a competitor’s customers and IP, Movvo faced a big technical hurdle: those assets ran on Google Cloud and included more than 90 virtual machines that had to be moved quickly to a different stack as their Google contract neared termination.

Working with Microsoft Portugal, the teams built a custom automated translation tool and used open‑source utilities to convert and transfer the VMs to Azure in an intensive four‑week effort. The move delivered a single, scalable platform with simpler billing and system management, better monitoring and performance, seamless integration with open‑source components like Cassandra, lower development costs, easier global deployment and a stronger position for international expansion.
