Case Study: eToro achieves scalable, machine-learning-powered CopyFunds with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the eToro Case Study

Playing follow the leader can pay big dividends

eToro is a social trading network with more than 6 million registered users in 140+ countries that lets investors follow and automatically copy successful traders. Facing the need for greater reliability, scalability, and development agility to support rapid growth and more advanced analytics, eToro migrated most of its platform to Microsoft Azure in 2015 and set out to build new, machine-learning-driven investment products without sacrificing transparency or risk controls.

Using Azure services—including Azure HDInsight (Spark), Microsoft R Server, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Web Apps, and Power BI—eToro developed CopyFunds: thematic and Top Trader portfolios that algorithmically select and weight traders based on performance and risk. The solution added simulation and analytics for continuous tuning, enforced risk limits and stop-loss protections, and enabled a fast ramp-up in machine learning capability; historically, more than 80% of copied trades have been profitable, and the Azure partnership improved agility, scalability, and operational efficiency.
