Case Study: Swiss Re achieves automated flight-delay payouts and rapid scalability with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Swiss Re Case Study

Pioneering insurance model automatically pays travelers for delayed flights

Swiss Re, a global reinsurance leader based in Zurich, wanted to diversify beyond traditional annual reinsurance contracts by creating a consumer-facing, fully automated microinsurance product that reimburses airline passengers for delayed flights. The challenge was to build a globally deployable, cost-effective, highly scalable solution that supported a modern DevOps workflow and fast time-to-market.

Working with partner Codit and using Microsoft Azure PaaS services—including Azure API Management, App Service, Azure SQL Database (elastic pool) and Visual Studio Team Services—Swiss Re launched the service in eight months. The platform processes millions of microinsurance policies and over a million API requests daily, supports continuous deployment, settles most claims within an hour, and now serves as a reusable digital foundation for additional innovative projects.
