Pet care leader turns monolithic app into a global distributed solution on Azure

Mars Petcare’s veterinary network, through VCA, needed a better way to manage referrals across 800+ hospitals because client records were being duplicated and didn’t always follow the pet to the next provider. Working with Microsoft Azure and partner CloudIQ Technologies, the company set out to modernize its monolithic practice management system and improve communication between hospitals and specialty clinics.

Microsoft Azure enabled a cloud-native, microservices-based solution called Automated Referral Function (ARF), built on Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure API Management, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Cache for Redis, Azure Functions, and Azure Pipelines. The result was automated record transfer and referral communications, faster deployment cycles, stronger security, and better scalability—while reducing average API response time to under 100 milliseconds and saving office staff significant time.
