Orthopedic hospital tests cloud-based cure for symptoms of rising healthcare costs

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), a specialty orthopedic hospital in Irvine, California, performing roughly 15,000 procedures a year, faced time-consuming, error-prone manual workflows for implant tracking and coordination across departments and vendors. Lacking accurate, real-time data on resource use made it difficult to compare treatment options, control rising costs, and shift from fee-for-service to value-based care.

HOI implemented ORHub, a cloud-based surgical resource management app built on Microsoft Azure and accessed on Microsoft Surface devices, to digitize implant documentation, streamline OR teamwork and vendor access, and feed real-time dashboards via Power BI. The solution cut paperwork and reconciliation time, improved implant-record accuracy and resource visibility, and set the organization up to use analytics and predictive insights to support cost reduction and value-based decision making.
