Case Study: Østfold Hospital achieves real-time care coordination and improved patient outcomes with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Østfold Hospital Case Study

Norwegian hospital uses innovative technology to improve doctors’ and patients’ lives

Østfold Hospital in Sarpsborg, Norway, is a 480‑bed regional facility that set out to build a people‑centric, future‑ready hospital to meet rising demand from an aging population. Planners identified a core challenge: make clinical information available in real time across the patient journey and to external providers while improving staff workflows, mobility, patient safety and data security without heavy custom development.

The hospital implemented a mobile‑centric Microsoft ecosystem—Windows 10, Surface devices, Windows Phones, Azure and Azure Machine Learning—supported by bedside TVs, electronic whiteboards, barcode medication dispensing, ambulance data feeds, Miracast and Kinect motion sensors mounted on beds. These changes gave clinicians faster access to up‑to‑date patient data, improved triage and room utilization, reduced fall risk through motion monitoring, and created a platform for predictive analytics to further improve care and safety.
