NLCHI shifts 1,700 critical healthcare workers to remote work in five days during COVID-19

Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI) needed to rapidly enable remote work and keep healthcare services running during COVID-19, while its mostly on-premises IT environment was under pressure. NLCHI turned to Microsoft Azure, using Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) to give healthcare workers secure access to their Windows desktops and apps from their own devices.

Microsoft Azure helped NLCHI deploy the solution in just five days, reaching about 1,700 users with peak usage of 3,700, while Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session improved efficiency by allowing up to 32 users per session host. With Azure Virtual Desktop, Nerdio Manager for Enterprise, and Azure Reserved VM Instances, NLCHI improved automation, scalability, and security while reducing compute costs and enabling automatic scale-down at the end of the day.
