New Zealand school saves $150,000 (NZD) and enhances education with cloud-based tools

Nayland College, a 1,000‑student secondary school in Nelson, New Zealand, needed more flexible, integrated IT tools after costly on‑premises servers and an initial rollout of Google Apps for Education failed to meet teachers’ needs or integrate with the school’s student management system. The school sought a cloud solution that would provide remote access, richer teaching tools, and lower administration overhead.

Working with Microsoft partner pcMedia, Nayland migrated to Office 365 ProPlus and Microsoft Azure, using a hybrid rollout, Azure Active Directory single sign‑on, and focused teacher training to speed adoption. The migration completed in about six months, enabled widespread use of OneNote, OneDrive and Skype for Business, moved roughly 90% of services to the cloud, streamlined IT, and saved the school NZD 150,000 in hardware—funds that were reinvested into classroom technology.
