TransAlta is a multinational Canadian power-generation and energy-trading company operating across Canada, the U.S., and Australia. Faced with low Alberta energy prices, the wind team shifted from 24x7 coverage to an 8x5 plus callout model and needed a fast, cross-platform way to decide whether an immediate technician dispatch was economically and safely justified—without heavy custom development.

Using Microsoft PowerApps, TransAlta built the Economic Callouts decision tool, which integrates 11 internal and external data sources via Azure App Service, secures access with Azure Active Directory, and logs decisions to SharePoint Online. The app prompts users for incident details, returns prescribed actions and repair estimates, and delivered an immediate ROI—paying for its implementation within two weeks—while reducing unnecessary callouts and being adopted by other business units.
