Mobile APP on Azure launches for George Municipality

George Municipality in South Africa launched a platform‑independent municipal mobile app in 2017 to boost citizen engagement and make municipal services more accessible. Facing typical public‑sector budget constraints and the need for high availability, data protection and zero‑downtime migration, the municipality worked with Microsoft partner BUI to move key workloads off on‑premises infrastructure and onto the cloud.

The solution used Microsoft Azure PaaS components—Azure App Service, Application Gateway, Cloud Services and Azure SQL Database—supported by local data‑center presence. The migration delivered immediate cost savings, improved uptime, better performance, tighter integration and stronger security, while enabling DevOps practices (Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD and test/stage/production environments). George is now positioned to add features such as in‑app bill viewing and payments.
