Mexican university uses open source platform on Microsoft cloud to drive innovation

The Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), a large Mexican higher-education institution serving about 23,000 students, faced frequent outages and poor performance when running its open-source learning platform (Moodle) and related services on limited local servers. Critical processes such as admissions and online courses were unreliable, causing user frustration and heavy maintenance demands on IT staff.

UADY migrated its Moodle, Apache/PHP/MySQL stack and identity management to Microsoft Azure and adopted Office 365 for users, integrating Active Directory for account management. The cloud deployment eliminated the need for costly local servers, improved stability and scalability (supporting 18,000–20,000 monthly users with 1,000–1,500 concurrent), reduced operational overhead, and increased student and faculty satisfaction without additional licensing or staffing costs.
