Case Study: ABUS Schweiz AG achieves secure, scalable cloud-based IoT firmware updates with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the ABUS Schweiz AG Case Study

Leading security firm in Germany develops safeguards for IoT devices

ABUS, a leading German security-technology manufacturer, was expanding its IoT portfolio—shipping tens of thousands of cameras and alarm systems yearly—but faced a major security challenge: enabling cloud-based firmware updates without opening customer networks via port forwarding, which could create exploitable vulnerabilities.

Working with Microsoft, ABUS built a cloud-based IoT gateway using a UWP app on Windows 10 IoT and Azure services (IoT Hub, Functions, Stream Analytics, App Service, etc.). The gateway lets IP devices securely call out for updates (delivered via the Microsoft Store and Windows 10 IoT), reducing management overhead and maintenance costs, providing scalable, safer connectivity for customers, and enabling future devices to embed IoT Hub connectivity to further streamline installations.
