A Microsoft Azure Case Study
The Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation, which serves more than 4 million residents, faced persistent citywide sanitation challenges—illegal dumping, blocked pickups, overfilled bins, and trash from homeless encampments—that required faster, more accountable responses. While MyLA311 gave residents multiple ways to report problems, the bureau needed a way to route, track, and manage those service requests in real time and give supervisors visibility into field operations.
The bureau deployed SANSTAR, a spatially enabled, cloud-based mobile solution built by Spatial Wave on Microsoft Azure (using Field Mapplet, Mapplet Analytic Tileboard, and Surface 3 LTE devices) to deliver routed work instructions, onsite reason codes, and live dashboards. The result: faster ticket processing, improved crew coordination and supervisor visibility, fewer overtime hours, quicker citizen responses, and cost savings—implemented within a tight two-month deadline and enabling proactive targeting of chronic problem areas.
