Kennametal backs its smart factories with SAP on Azure

Kennametal, a global materials science and tooling company, needed to modernize its increasingly complex and costly IT landscape so it could support smart factory initiatives and faster, more data-driven operations. Its SAP ERP systems and related workloads were running on aging on-premises infrastructure, making it difficult to scale, improve disaster recovery, and turn factory data into actionable insights. Microsoft Azure was selected as the cloud platform to help Kennametal move toward a factory-of-the-future architecture.

Using Microsoft Azure, Kennametal migrated its 3-TB SAP ERP environment in less than 25 hours during a planned weekend cutover, consolidated three major datacenters, and implemented Azure Site Recovery for a three-hour disaster recovery objective. The move improved security, performance, and scalability while enabling new analytics and machine-learning use cases. Microsoft Azure helped Kennametal lower infrastructure and maintenance costs, speed up application deployment, and unlock data from its factories for digital transformation.
