Case Study: Municipality of Catania, Italy achieves safeguarded public data and reliable service continuity with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Municipality of Catania, Italy Case Study

Italian municipality uses cloud computing to help safeguard public data and service continuity

Comune di Catania, the municipal government serving 313,000 residents and more than 1 million people in its metropolitan area, needed to better manage and protect public information against growing cybersecurity threats while meeting European data‑handling regulations. The challenge was to ensure service continuity for critical public records, control access to sensitive data, and optimize IT costs without overburdening municipal staff.

Working with Microsoft and partner Softiam, Catania implemented a hybrid cloud solution that combines Azure and Azure SQL Data Warehouse with its on‑premises SQL Server environment, using a simplified VPN and automated backups to safeguard data and support GDPR and Model Clauses compliance. The result is improved data security and reliability, reduced maintenance and total cost of ownership through consumption‑based billing, consistent business continuity for municipal services, and a flexible platform to support future innovation.
