A Microsoft Azure Case Study
Hymans Robertson, a UK pensions, investments and benefits consultancy, created Guided Outcomes (GO) to help employees understand and improve their retirement savings. GO relies on compute‑intensive Monte Carlo simulations, and running those calculations on Hymans Robertson’s on‑premises servers took days for a single 2,500‑member scheme—turning computing limits into a barrier to taking on larger clients and making hardware purchases uneconomical.
Working with partner endjin, Hymans Robertson re‑architected GO to run bursts of simulations in Microsoft Azure using a hybrid model with Azure Batch, Blob storage, Virtual Machines and Application Insights. The company can now spin up 500–1,000+ cores, cut a 2,500‑member run from a weekend to about 90 minutes, avoid roughly £100,000/year in infrastructure costs, free consultants for billable work, reduce model‑risk through faster iteration, and expand GO into new markets.
