Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which provides neurology services to around 760,000 people in Dorset, led the Epilepsy Care Alliance to tackle limitations in epilepsy care: seizures are hard to predict, treatment optimization can take months or years, and clinicians must rely on patients’ subjective recall. These constraints drive higher costs, unnecessary appointments, and adverse outcomes for many people with epilepsy.
The partners (Graphnet, Shearwater, the University of Kent, and Microsoft) deployed myCareCentric with Microsoft Band devices and HealthVault to collect continuous physiological and patient-reported data. Early evaluations showed clinicians can spot patterns—movement, heart‑rate variability and galvanic skin response have predictive value—and use that objective data to tailor treatment, reduce unnecessary follow-ups, and move toward machine‑learning–driven seizure detection; formal trials are underway and initial results are promising.
