Case Study: GeekWire achieves on-demand scalability for 2 million monthly readers and 45% cost savings with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Geekwire Case Study

How GeekWire is serving the latest tech news to 2 million readers worldwide

GeekWire, a Seattle-based tech news site reaching up to 1.5–2 million users and more than 3 million page views monthly, faced growing performance and scalability challenges as traffic and daily publishing (20–30 articles) increased. The team needed better visibility into infrastructure, faster page loads for SEO and social traffic, and the ability to handle unpredictable traffic spikes without relying on host support or manual tier upgrades.

GeekWire migrated its WordPress stack to Microsoft Azure, using Docker on Linux VMs, Azure Database for MySQL, Azure CDN, Redis Cache, Azure Container Registry and plans to adopt Azure App Service on Linux. The move provided on-demand scalability, improved diagnostics and deployment speed, lower page load times, and a 45% reduction in hosting costs.
