Homebuilder accommodates huge acquisition, outsources IT work by moving to the cloud

TRI Pointe Group, a major U.S. homebuilder, faced a sudden fivefold company expansion and a 50x increase in IT infrastructure after acquiring Weyerhaeuser Real Estate (WRECO) in 2013. With a six‑month legal deadline to transfer more than 100 servers — including Oracle JD Edwards and Hyperion environments — the company needed rapid, scalable IT capacity without building a new datacenter.

Working with partner Pravis, TRI Pointe moved to Microsoft Azure IaaS, deploying 100+ VMs, Azure SQL Database, storage, virtual networking, a JD Edwards disaster‑recovery site, Hyperion BI, Citrix XenApp, backups and file replication. The cloud rollout met the acquisition deadline, delivered elastic scalability and disaster recovery, lowered infrastructure overhead, and let TRI Pointe’s IT team focus on supporting homebuilding rather than managing datacenters.
