A Microsoft Azure Case Study
Halliburton’s Landmark Software and Services wanted to make its DecisionSpace Well Engineering software easier for universities to adopt. Although Landmark granted no‑cost academic licenses, university IT teams still had to provision powerful workstations, install and manage the software and licenses, and cope with limited student access—creating time, cost, and flexibility barriers for classes and students.
Landmark moved DecisionSpace to Microsoft Azure, provisioning an Azure virtual machine per student (with SQL Server and a hosted licensing server) and enforcing access by IP or VPN. Pilots at the University of Houston (50 students) and in India (150 students) ran smoothly, eliminating on‑premises deployments, speeding rollouts, improving scalability and student access from PCs and tablets, and reducing Landmark’s hosting costs by about 50%.
