Case Study: Vapiano achieves scalable global expansion and faster innovation in fast-casual dining with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Vapiano Case Study

Global restaurant chain dishes on the benefits of cloud computing

Vapiano, a global fast-casual restaurant chain, faced scaling challenges as it expanded to more than 185 locations: on-premises servers and a VPN struggled to support international restaurants, storage costs were rising, and a small IT team couldn’t sustain the infrastructure needed to roll out new digital services (mobile apps, smart-card payments, online ordering) while meeting European data‑privacy requirements.

Working with Microsoft partner Obungi, Vapiano moved to a hybrid Microsoft Azure environment and Office 365, migrating its data warehouse, BI, API layer, and integration services to the cloud while retaining on-premises POS where needed. The platform delivered greater agility, lower storage and management costs, faster time-to-market, and new revenue streams—enabling online ordering, a loyalty app, in-store kiosks, improved BI and reporting for managers, and a scalable foundation for further expansion.
