Global marine energy firm improves communication and collaboration with cloud solutions

Teekay is a global marine energy company with about 7,500 employees, offices in 15 countries and roughly 80% of staff working on vessels and offshore. The company relied on on-premises systems and satellite links to reach its dispersed workforce, which created inflexibility, high administrative and hardware overhead, and challenges meeting security and regulatory requirements across geographies.

To address this, Teekay adopted a hybrid cloud approach centered on Office 365—building on earlier use of Yammer—and deployed OneDrive, Skype for Business and a hybrid Exchange setup so offshore users remain supported. The move (about 80% of onshore users migrated) reduced IT overhead, improved global communication and collaboration (helping employees share best practices), satisfied compliance requirements, and shifted the company to a cloud-first IT philosophy while planning further Azure and licensing upgrades.
