A Microsoft Azure Case Study
First Tech Federal Credit Union, a federally chartered credit union serving 400,000+ members with roughly $9B in assets, needed to modernize from an on‑premises active/passive datacenter model that was costly to scale and left the organization vulnerable to service disruption. Its goals were to reduce costs, improve scalability and availability, and meet strict financial‑services security and compliance requirements so it could achieve a “zero failed interactions” member‑service vision.
First Tech chose Microsoft Azure for its regulatory and compliance capabilities and is executing a phased migration: stand up a cloud disaster‑recovery instance (using StorSimple and Azure Backup), move test/dev and corporate services, implement active/active production with System Center monitoring, and add geo‑redundancy before decommissioning the primary on‑premises datacenter. The move delivered faster provisioning, better scalability, stronger security and auditability, reduced costs and planned downtime, and shifted engineering teams into cloud advocates—putting First Tech on track toward higher uptime and its zero‑failed‑interactions goal while drawing interest from industry peers.
