Finning, the world’s largest Caterpillar equipment dealer, faced a sharp downturn in mining and needed new ways to help customers cut costs and boost yields. Machines already produced massive amounts of sensor data, but Finning lacked a scalable BI and predictive-analytics solution to turn that data into actionable insight across hundreds of thousands of assets.

Working with Metric Arts, Finning built an Azure-based IoT and BI platform using Power BI, Azure Cortana Intelligence Suite (Machine Learning), HDInsight, MongoDB, RStudio and Azure SQL to stream, store, analyze and visualize sensor data. The solution delivered fast dashboards and machine‑learning insights that reduced operator-caused events by 80%, cut unexpected machine stops by 10%, recovered 103 machine days to transport more than 1 million extra tons, and lowered idle time by 17%, improving fuel efficiency, ROI and customer competitiveness.
