FedEx delivers on modern workplace vision with cloud computing

FedEx, a global logistics leader with more than 400,000 employees and 13 million daily shipments, faced a legacy-technology challenge as e-commerce disruption and internet-era demands outpaced its custom-built systems. To stay competitive and scalable in a world of rapid last-mile innovation, the company launched Project Renewal in 2009 to re-evaluate and modernize its IT—moving away from deeply vertical applications toward cloud-native, API-driven architectures.

FedEx standardized on cloud platforms and SaaS, adopting Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 to enable a hybrid compute model that bursts containerized traffic between on-premises and public cloud and to protect data with intelligent security services. The company built an API-first, cloud-native same-day retail app and shifted to “everything as a service,” which reduced IT overhead, extended last-mile capabilities, improved collaboration for its global workforce, and gave frontline workers secure, on-demand access to the tools and information they need.
