Case Study: LG CNS achieves rapid smart factory transformation and predictive maintenance with Microsoft Azure

Expanding smart factories from production to management

LG CNS, a large Korean IT services company within the LG group, wanted to turn its long-standing manufacturing IT expertise into a cloud-delivered smart-factory product. The challenge was to collect and analyze massive, real-time factory and product data, move beyond traditional SI projects, enable global deployment and scalable operations, and provide predictive maintenance and production management across diverse environments.

LG CNS built ezUMS on Microsoft Azure PaaS using IoT Hub for ingestion, Azure Service Fabric for scale-out analytics, Azure Cosmos DB and HDInsight for storage/processing, and Azure Machine Learning for failure prediction. The cloud redesign shortened development cycles (from ~2 years to months), modernized the UI with HTML5, supported pilots like LG Chem’s ESS monitoring, and opened new managed-service revenue streams by delivering real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and broader market reach.
