eThekwini municipality embarks on data-driven, ‘smart city’ journey with Microsoft

The eThekwini Municipality needed better ways to tackle urban crime and water loss while improving service delivery for a growing population. Working with Microsoft Azure, the municipality used the Azure-based Cocity app to let citizens anonymously report crimes and help law enforcement respond more effectively.

Microsoft Azure also supported a data modernization effort for the water and sanitation unit, using Azure Data Lake, an Azure landing zone, and Power BI to consolidate fragmented data and improve reporting. The result was a single source of truth, faster access to information, and report preparation reduced from 10–12 days to about 5–7 days, while also improving response times and reducing human error.
