Case Study: Vattenfall achieves 24/7 renewable energy matching with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Vattenfall Case Study

Energy provider Vattenfall finds consistent data solutions with next-gen BI

Microsoft Azure worked with Vattenfall to address a major challenge in renewable energy tracking: the lack of hourly visibility into where electricity comes from and whether consumption is matched with renewable supply. For Microsoft’s new datacenter regions in Sweden, the goal was to support a 100 percent renewable energy strategy with more accurate, 24/7 monitoring using Microsoft Azure services, including Azure IoT Central and Power BI.

Microsoft Azure and Vattenfall implemented the 24/7 Matching solution to monitor hourly energy consumption and match it with Guarantees of Origin. The pilot at Vattenfall headquarters and Microsoft’s Stockholm office showed strong results, with 94 percent of total office energy consumption matched to Swedish wind and 6 percent to Swedish hydro power. The solution also enabled Microsoft to sign a power purchase agreement covering 100 percent of its energy use in Sweden and move closer to its 2025 renewable energy and 2030 carbon-negative goals.
