Energy company electrifies pace of innovation and expansion

Ambit Energy is a Dallas-based retail electricity and natural-gas provider with about 1.5 million customers across 16 states and DC. Facing aggressive growth goals and razor-thin margins, the company had adopted microservices, DevOps, and CI/CD for rapid software delivery, but infrastructure provisioning (months for new servers) lagged far behind, forcing IT to focus on hardware and availability rather than product innovation and market expansion.

Ambit moved core infrastructure to Microsoft Azure—using Azure Container Service/AKS, Azure SQL Database, Storage, VMs, ExpressRoute, and a mix of ARM templates, Terraform, Puppet, Docker, and Visual Studio Team Services—to automate provisioning as code and enable hybrid connectivity to on-prem systems. The change let infrastructure keep pace with development, supporting 20–30 daily deployments, enabling a Japan rollout in 2–3 weeks, reducing downtime and operational overhead, and cutting lifecycle hardware costs by about 22%, improving competitiveness and speed to market.
