East Mining Company boosts efficiency with Power BI and data-driven decision-making

East Mining Company (EMCO) is one of Russia’s largest thermal coal producers in Sakhalin, shipping about 12 million tons annually to Asia‑Pacific markets. Rapid growth in volumes, machinery and staff left the company with poor visibility across its logistics and operations, creating a need to consolidate data and speed up analysis for better decision‑making.

EMCO implemented Microsoft Power BI (fed by a data warehouse with near‑real‑time inputs) and uses dashboards company‑wide to monitor operations. This enabled faster, data‑driven decisions, improved dump truck and excavator productivity by 6–7% (about $4 million impact), cut labor costs for analysis and reporting tenfold, and is driving an expected 13–15% overall productivity gain as the company scales toward higher exports.
