Case Study: Powel reduces municipal water loss and detects leaks with Microsoft Azure (IoT Hub & Machine Learning)

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Powel Case Study

Developers digitize water, address IoT solutions with Azure IoT Hub and Azure Machine Learning

Powel, a Norwegian software company serving the power and utilities sector, faced a pressing municipal challenge: Norwegian water networks were losing more than 30% of supply to leaks due to aging infrastructure. The team needed to define “normal” water flow even when leaks already skewed historical data, and build a scalable way to monitor flows continuously to detect new leaks quickly.

Powel combined Azure IoT Hub to ingest real-time SCADA sensor data, Azure Machine Learning to build predictive models from historical data, and Power BI for exploratory analysis and front-end insights. The resulting Water Alert solution securely scales to many devices, compares live telemetry against ML-predicted normal flow, and issues actionable alerts—helping utilities locate leaks faster, reduce water loss and costs, and unlock long-hidden value in their operational data.
