Case Study: North American Eagle achieves real-time, data-driven supersonic testing to pursue the world land speed record with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the North American Eagle Case Study

Data-driven bid for world’s fastest land speed record

North American Eagle, a small U.S. team converting a Lockheed F‑104 Starfighter into a supersonic car called "The Widowmaker," set out to reclaim the land speed record. To safely push speeds beyond 763 mph, the team needed to process more than 27 million data points collected from 24 onboard sensors after every run and make immediate, risk‑aware adjustments.

Microsoft built a cloud solution using Azure (including advanced CFD workloads and Blob Storage), Azure Machine Learning, Office 365 and Power BI to ingest, analyze and visualize data in near real time. Sensor data is published to Power BI dashboards and fed into Azure ML to create predictive models, enabling faster, data‑driven decisions and incremental, safer increases in speed.
