Case Study: Met Office achieves more accurate forecasting with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Met Office Case Study

Crowdsourcing weather for better forecasting

Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, needed a reliable and economical cloud partner to expand its forecasting capabilities and support the Weather Observation Website (WOW) project. Using Microsoft Azure and Office 365, it aimed to collect more localized data from public weather stations and other citizen scientists to improve the accuracy and personalization of its forecasts.

Microsoft Azure was selected to power WOW, enabling the Met Office to add crowd-sourced observations and plan for even more data sources, including moving platforms such as cars and boats. The solution delivered the resilience and scalability needed as contributors grew, and Microsoft Azure is already helping the Met Office enhance weather forecasting with broader, more accurate input.
