Creating Greener Solutions with Open Source Technologies on Azure

Johnson Controls, a global leader in HVAC equipment and building-automation systems with about 130,000 employees and US$37.2 billion in sales, needed an extensible cloud platform to support its Linux-based big data and IoT workloads. The company’s on-premises, open source stacks (CentOS, MySQL/PostgreSQL, Hadoop, HBase) required a cloud provider that could seamlessly run those technologies to enable a worldwide rollout and handle massive sensor data for smarter building solutions.

Johnson Controls chose Microsoft Azure IoT Suite and related Azure services (HDInsight, Machine Learning, Storage, Linux and Windows VMs, Power BI) to run its open source stacks, speeding development and reducing time-to-market while enabling more energy-efficient solutions. The deployment connected thousands of chillers, more than 5,000 rooftops and about 40,000 subsystems to Azure, and fostered a collaborative partnership with Microsoft around scalability, security and open-source support.
