Legacy Health, a large community-owned nonprofit healthcare system in Portland, Oregon, needed to protect always-on access to its Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system from disasters, outages, and geographic risks. The organization also wanted to modernize its disaster recovery setup and reduce the cost and complexity of managing critical healthcare infrastructure.

Microsoft Azure helped Legacy Health build a fully redundant live hybrid and disaster recovery environment using Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Storage, Azure Backup, and Azure SQL Database, moving 22 terabytes of data and 100 servers in 11 months. The solution improved EMR reliability and availability, supported up to 7,700 concurrent users, cut disaster recovery operating costs by nearly 65 percent, and avoided about a half-million-dollar capital purchase.
