Case Study: Gauteng Provincial Legislature achieves 1m Rand cost savings and rapid SAP provisioning with Microsoft Azure

Cloud is the answer for local South African law makers

Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), the legislative arm of South Africa’s Gauteng province, needed to upgrade hardware to support its mission‑critical SAP applications but faced tight public‑sector budgets and procurement constraints. Director of ICT Surendra Chetty authorized a proof‑of‑concept to explore cloud options after traditional hardware refreshes proved costly and slow.

Working with Microsoft partner Gijima, GPL migrated its SAP NetWeaver and BI environments to Microsoft Azure, standing up development and test systems in hours and using special cloud funding models to avoid impacting production. The Azure deployment delivers reliable, low‑latency access and the ability to de‑provision workloads when idle, resulting in estimated savings of about 1 million Rand (≈ $70,000).
