City maximizes IT budget with private cloud and self-service server provisioning tool

The City of Henderson, Nevada—a local government serving ~270,800 residents with about 70 IT staff supporting 1,855 full‑time and over 1,000 part‑time employees—had virtualized its datacenter but relied on slow, manual processes for requisitioning and provisioning servers. As server counts ballooned and budgets stayed flat, the approval and build workflow could take up to two weeks, creating project delays and burdening a small IT team.

To fix this, the city built a Microsoft private cloud using Windows Server and System Center 2012 R2, deployed Microsoft Azure Pack, and added Gridpro Request Management to provide a self‑service portal and automated approval/orchestration tied to Active Directory. The new process cut server delivery from two weeks to one day or less, sped project delivery, freed staff from low‑level tasks, improved hardware utilization (about 600 VMs on 100 hosts), and positioned the city for hybrid cloud scalability with Azure.
