Chilean nonprofit uses machine learning to process insurance claims 100 times faster

Asociación Chilena de Seguridad (ACHS) is a Chilean nonprofit that provides workers’ compensation insurance and healthcare for about 2.4 million workers. Facing a monthly intake of 20,000 claims but a manual coding capacity of only 3,200 claims—and a 250,000-case backlog—ACHS needed a scalable, compliant way to process claims quickly and accurately.

Working with Metric Arts, ACHS built an automated forms-coding application using Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and Azure SQL Database, training the model on historical classifications. The automation eliminated the 2015 backlog in three weeks, delivers roughly 100× faster processing (capacity of 80,000 cases/week), handles over 75% of claims automatically, improved accuracy, and reduced staff workload so people now handle only exceptions.
