CFD setup and computational time cut 50 percen

CAE Technology, a global engineering services firm with about 75 engineers, faced long turnaround times for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) projects that are critical to clients in aerospace, automotive and other industries. For a steady‑state, incompressible flow analysis of a V6 engine intake manifold, desktop workstations meant simulations and postprocessing could take many hours or days—slowing design optimization and delivery for a major automotive customer.

CAE ran the STAR‑CCM+ CFD application packaged in an UberCloud container on Microsoft Azure HPC (A9 instances with 128 cores, 1 TB RAM and 40 Gbps InfiniBand RDMA). The 3.47M‑cell polyhedral mesh took 17.7 minutes and 10,000 iterations completed in 5 hours 20 minutes versus more than 14 hours on a workstation, cutting overall setup and compute time by about 50%. The containerized setup simplified software configuration, offered cloud scalability and gave CAE faster, more flexible tools for time‑sensitive projects.
