Centrica moves to the cloud to power innovation

Centrica, the UK energy services company behind brands like British Gas, needed to modernize its on-premises Hadoop data platform to improve scalability, reduce costs, and make data easier to access across the business. Using Microsoft Azure products including Azure HDInsight and Power BI, Centrica set out to create a cloud-centric data platform that would consolidate data, reduce silos, and support better analytics and self-service.

Microsoft Azure helped Centrica build a new platform with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Gen2, Azure HDInsight, and Power BI, enabling minimal-code migration, centralized governance, and faster data processing and reporting. The results were significant: operational costs and total cost of ownership dropped, performance and scalability improved, and Centrica reported overall cost of ownership was reduced by more than 70%, while data processing and analysis became much faster.
