Case Study: OSIsoft achieves cloud-scale performance and faster innovation with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the OSIsoft Case Study

Bringing the Industrial IoT to life with advanced analytics

OSIsoft, creator of the PI System that collects and analyzes real‑time sensor data for manufacturers, energy companies, utilities, and other industries, needed a way to deliver cloud‑scale services for massive, fast‑moving operational data while preserving backward compatibility for conservative on‑premises customers and coordinating work across distributed development teams.

OSIsoft built cloud offerings on Microsoft Azure—adopting Visual Studio Online for cloud‑first development and Azure Service Fabric to create a cloud‑native historian and services like PI Cloud Connect, plus connectors using Event Hubs and integrations with Azure ML, Data Factory, and Power BI. The result: comparable per‑machine performance with vastly greater scale, a rewrite completed in under 10 months, an estimated 24‑month development time savings, streamlined global development and ALM, stronger hybrid support, and a move from six‑month on‑premises releases to continuous SaaS updates roughly every three weeks.
