BP adopts hybrid cloud and moves applications and datacenter operations to Azure

BP, the global energy company, has moved much of its IT to Microsoft Azure as part of a long-term digital transformation, but needed a better way to govern a fast-growing cloud estate and control spending. Its previous cloud governance process was highly manual and inconsistent across 250 subscriptions, while teams also needed clearer insight into usage and costs.

Using Microsoft Azure, BP implemented Azure Policy for automated governance and Azure Cost Management with Azure Advisor for detailed cost tracking and optimization. The result was more consistent, scalable cloud controls and a 40% reduction in cloud spend, even as usage nearly doubled. BP also accelerated delivery, cutting infrastructure deployment time from 6–8 weeks to about 24 hours.
