Biotech Innovator Uses Cloud-Based Tools to Support New Drug Development

Moderna Therapeutics, a Cambridge-based biotech founded in 2010, is pioneering messenger RNA (mRNA) therapeutics and needed IT that matched its “Moderna speed”: fast, scalable, highly collaborative tools that work across devices and global partners while meeting strict security and regulatory requirements. The company relied heavily on data‑intensive tools like Excel and required reliable, mobile access to documents and communications to accelerate R&D and coordinate with external collaborators.

Moderna deployed Microsoft Office 365 (Enterprise E3) and Azure—including Exchange Online, Lync, Office Online, Office 365 ProPlus, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online—to provide secure, cloud-based productivity, real-time coauthoring, multifactor authentication for partner sites, and rapid user onboarding. Since adopting Office 365 in 2013, Moderna has grown fourfold, opened two new facilities, formed partnerships with AstraZeneca and Alexion, launched an oncology subsidiary, and significantly increased collaboration, productivity, and reliability so scientists can focus on innovation.
