Azure powers donor registration and booking at NHS Blood

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) provides blood, organ donation and transplant services across the UK and relies on volunteers to register as donors. When high-profile recruitment campaigns drove sudden surges in traffic, their legacy systems were overwhelmed and slow, creating a need for a more agile, responsive platform to manage demand and engage donors.

Working with Microsoft, NHSBT moved to Azure to deliver an online booking service, mobile app, CMS and modern backend systems. The new platform cut donor registration from about a month to hours, attracted younger donors, handled 100-fold traffic spikes, reduced infrastructure costs and let staff focus on improving patient outcomes.
