A Microsoft Azure Case Study
M-Files is a Finland-based enterprise content management (ECM) company that began by solving its own problem of fragmented content systems and storage. What started as an in-house document-management tool became a commercial product in 2005, and as customers demanded hosted options M-Files moved to the cloud in 2011. The company’s challenge was to converge siloed data, deliver high availability and security, and accelerate feature development without the cost and overhead of building extensive infrastructure.
M-Files built its SaaS offering on Microsoft Azure, using Azure SQL Database (with elastic pools and non-clustered columnstore indexes), Blob and Table storage, Azure Active Directory, Key Vault, CDN and other services to achieve scalability, security and rapid development. The result: faster product iteration and lower infrastructure costs, six-times faster growth than the ECM market, more than 1,000 databases across 12 data centers, over 10x query performance improvements for critical workloads, and built-in HA, encryption and identity features that let M-Files focus on innovation like machine learning and image analysis.
